Single-use plastic bottle in ocean

Turning the tide on ocean plastic together

BRITA continues its long-standing partnership with WDC

BRITA x WDC

Every year, over 20 million metric tonnes of plastic find their way into our oceans. That’s a staggering amount – and a huge threat to marine life. That’s why, since 2017, BRITA has been proud to partner with Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC), the leading charity dedicated to protecting these extraordinary creatures. Together, we’re working to combat one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time: plastic pollution.

The Whale Watchers

Our partnership with WDC has achieved some truly remarkable milestones over the years. One of our standout moments was teaming up with climate activist and McFly bassist Dougie Poynter, to publish a children’s book called The Whale Watchers. The story follows Finn, a young boy on his summer holidays, as he embarks on a mission to rescue a whale that has become entangled in plastic, sparking conversations among young readers about protecting our oceans. To take this message further, we launched a competition inviting schools and youth groups to design recycling bins promoting the reduce, reuse, recycle ethos. The winning projects received £3,000 to fund their own sustainability initiatives, helping turn education into action.

The 'Clear on Bottled Water' Campaign

WDC also supported BRITA with our ‘Clear on bottled water’ campaign, featuring Inbetweeners star James Buckley, working to expose single-use plastic bottled water as the marketing trick of the century. Over 80% of the rubbish found in our oceans is plastic, so reducing our reliance on unnecessary, single-use plastic bottles is vital to achieve our shared mission of a sustainable future.

As we enter another year of partnership with WDC, we’re excited about what the future holds.

Through BRITA’s funding, WDC will continue its critical work, from advising governments and managing conservation projects to conducting field research and tackling threats to endangered species so their populations can recover. Our sponsorship will support innovative campaigns like ‘Help Michelin to change the course’, persuading a globally respected brand like Michelin to stop encouraging people to eat in restaurants where whales might be served.

Group high-five.

Save The Whales. Save The World

But it’s not just about funding – we’re rolling up our sleeves and getting stuck in. To kick off 2025, WDC visited BRITA HQ to share updates on their latest initiatives, including a groundbreaking project tackling fishing-related marine debris. After the session, we celebrated with a fun quiz.

Congratulations to the Uxbridge office’s joint quiz winners and to Team Whale at the Bicester office for their quiz victory, along with the prize of a WDC adoption!

WDC and BRITA Join Up!

The BRITA team are also gearing up to get involved in an upcoming Urban Beach Clean volunteering event. You don’t need to live near the sea to contribute to pollution, and you don’t need to live near the sea to help prevent it. Collecting litter near you will not only improve your local environment but also help stem the flow of plastic waste into the ocean.

Our heartfelt thanks go to WDC for their tireless efforts to protect whales, dolphins, and their ocean habitats. We’re honoured to support their work and can’t wait to see what we can achieve together in 2025.
