Protecting our most precious resource

To mark World Water Day, BRITA is launching its ‘Worldwide Water Stories’, which shine a light on the issues of water scarcity and access to clean water. Here in the UK, we’ve partnered with inspiring charities to make a positive impact on the environment and our water.

Why is World Water Day celebrated? 💧

BRITA has always been committed to raising awareness and being part of the solution to the global water crisis. Climate change among other factors, is playing a part in denying 2.2bn people across the planet access to clean drinking water. World Water Day is an opportunity to shine a light on the issues of water scarcity and clean water, and this year BRITA is launching its “Worldwide Water Stories”, showcasing compelling stories from diverse corners of the globe.

The 12 stories that makeup Worldwide Water Stories come from those impacted by water scarcity, as well as experts and campaigners, to draw attention to the different regions affected.

Proud to partner with WDC & WWT to make a sustainable change 🤝

Here in the UK, we have the privilege of largely universal access to clean water, however, there’s still so much we need to do to protect our waterways and keep them clean from harmful pollution such as single-use plastic.

To help be part of the solution, BRITA UK has partnered with two outstanding charities, the Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) and WWT. Our partnerships mean we can leave a positive impact on the environment, from raising awareness of plastic waste to help protect marine life with WDC to restoring Britain’s precious wetlands with WWT.

Marine conservation with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation

BRITA partnered with WDC back in 2016, with a shared ambition to reduce plastic pollution and protect marine life. A shocking 95% of the plastic in the seas comes from litter originally dropped in our towns and cities according to WDC, and items such as single-use plastic water bottles are a major culprit, with 7 billion used every year in the UK.

BRITA has been a major sponsor of WDC’s marine conservation projects, which in recent months has helped to fund several campaigns, including achieving higher protection for porpoises from the United Nations, working to end whaling and deep sea mining in Norway, as well as the launch of a new interactive exhibition at the Scottish dolphin centre. This year we are supporting WDC’s Marine Coordinator position to bolster advocacy and research in the important area of marine protection and reducing plastic pollution.

Wetlands

Supporting WWT

BRITA is delighted to announce a new partnership with WWT, a charity dedicated to creating and restoring UK wetlands for nature, people, and the climate. Wetlands are one of the hidden heroes in our fight against climate change, as they’re carbon sequesters. Not only this, but they also serve as a natural filtration system for water, helping to keep it clean and removing pollutants.

Wetlands

WWT’s Blue Recovery Fund

BRITA will be funding WWT’s Blue Recovery Fund to increase the amount of wetlands nationally. Recently, the project has come on leaps and bounds, with a new map laying out all the potential zones for wetlands across the country. The areas identified are found everywhere from disused land in urban areas to vast farmland in remote regions.

To demonstrate the value of wetlands beyond their environmental credentials, WWT, with the help of partners like BRITA, has calculated that an estimated £18 billion of economic benefit would be provided by the creation of 100,000 hectares of wetland.

How we achieve a positive impact on the environment

At BRITA we don’t just want to be the sustainable alternative to single-use bottled water, we also want to go further by ensuring we leave a positive impact on the environment. We’re committed to doing this by partnering with charities that can help protect our most precious resource, from finding ways to cut down plastic entering our seas, to innovative solutions to keep our water sources clean.
