Wetlands

BRITA x WWT

Supporting The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust to develop 140,000 football pitches worth of healthy wetland habitat.

At BRITA, we love water. It's the life source of everything and looking after it and protecting it for the future is a collective responsibility we’re proud to be part of.

We’re delighted to be partnering with WWT to support the Blue Recovery Fund which aims to bring individuals and businesses together with one shared vision – to create and restore UK wetlands for nature, people and the climate.

Wetlands are one of the world’s most biodiverse habitats, providing homes and places to rest for many endangered species. However, they are also under pressure and in the UK, we have lost 90% of our wetlands.

From large-scale coastal wetlands like saltmarshes, urban wetlands, ponds, lakes and even mini wetlands in gardens, The Blue Recovery Fund is focused on the creation of 100,000ha of new and restored wetlands in the UK, which equates to around 140,000 football pitches of healthy wetland habitat.

All creatures great and small

Did you know, 40% of the worlds plants and animals depend on wetlands? And every year 200 new species are discovered in freshwater wetlands? This makes coastal wetlands, like mangroves, are some of the most biologically diverse places on earth.

Capturing the carbon

Wetlands are the most effective carbon sinks on the planet, with peatlands storing twice as much as all the world’s forests combined. At WWT Streat salt marches, 10,000 tonnes of carbon is stored every year.

Protecting against natural disasters

By storing rain like a sponge, and by buffering us from the sea, wetlands can protect us from floods, tsunamis and cyclones. Wetlands can also protect us from droughts and reduce air temperatures by up to 10 degrees Celsius.

Supporting wellness

Research from WWT has highlighted that 65% of people say that being near water is their favourite part of nature and improves their wellbeing and just 10 minutes of waterside a day can leave positive feelings.

Just being here and understanding why wetlands and their protection are so important to the environment is great, but if you want to take it further, there are several ways you can also get involved:

  • Create your own mini wetland at home. Click here for WWT’s guide on how to get started.

  • Looking for a slightly different gift for a loved one this year? Why not adopt an otter or another wetland animal? Or a wetland itself. Click here to find out how.

  • If you fancy donating some of your time, WWT has lots of great volunteering opportunities across their sites. Click here to find out more.
